Park on a Cemetery
Rucphen, The Netherlands
The heart of the village of Rucphen used to be the catholic church, both in terms of space and ritual.
The church was surrounded by a graveyard. Changes over time, including the destruction of the old church and the construction of a new one in a different place and direction, clouded the spatial logic.
The transformation of the churchyard into a park brings the opportunity to restore this logic. A wide block of beech hedge conjures up the footprint of the old church, a slightly raised plateau for small performances at the position of the bell tower.
In a similar way, the structure of graves and paths is visualised by planting the graves with a mix of annual plants and the paths with mown grass.
