Villa Welgelegen

Rotterdam, The Netherlands

Design for the garden of Villa Welgelegen in association with Erwin Stam Tuinstudio. This 1872 villa on the majestic Parklaan in Rotterdam, The Netherlands has been renovated into luxury office spaces. The design was inspired by a 1865 map showing a landscape of villas set in large green gardens, with undulating paths, ponds and trees. Since this atmosphere fits the architecture of the villa so well, we aimed for a contemporary version of this. A central water element with bubbling fountains and an edge of Italian porphyry is positioned across the depth of the garden, pulling in the eye from the adjoining sidewalk. Crossing the water a contemporary version of an ornamental bridge with elegant curls, incorporating the clients initials for those who take a better look. The historical red beeches and plane trees are incorporated in the design and complemented with ribbons of planting. A gazebo stands on a small mound in an open spot between the trees.
